Since exploding out of Cincinnati in the mid-2000s, Foxy Shazam have treated rock music less like a genre and more like an unstable science experiment, throwing glam, soul, piano-rock, punk and theatrical excess into the same furnace and seeing what survives. Nearly twenty years later, they remain beautifully impossible to pin down.
The current lineup of Eric Nally, Sky White, Alex Nauth, Misster Universe, Devin Williams and Teddy Aitkins continues to approach performance with the same sense of fearless excess that made Foxy Shazam cult heroes in the first place.
Now, Australian audiences are finally about to witness that chaos firsthand, with Foxy Shazam bringing their wildly unpredictable live show down under in support of their latest album, Box Of Magic. It marks a rare Australian run for a band whose reputation has largely travelled ahead of them through feverish live clips, cult fandom and increasingly surreal pop-cultural crossovers.
Released last year, Box Of Magic swings between towering glam-rock hooks, explosive horn sections, candy-coated melodies and moments that feel seconds away from complete collapse.
That sense of theatrical excess has spilled into Hollywood too. Director James Gunn has repeatedly championed the band, even collaborating with Foxy Shazam on ‘The Mighty Crab Joys’ theme. The band’s classic anthem “Oh Lord” as the theme song for Season 2 of Peacemaker.
Recent US runs including the Rock N Rolla Coast Tour and festival appearances alongside acts like Waterparks have only reinforced their reputation as one of modern rock’s most entertaining live propositions. Horns arrive without warning, pianos crash into riffs from impossible angles and the whole thing constantly threatens to spin off the rails while somehow remaining perfectly controlled underneath the mayhem.
Australian crowds are about to find out exactly why.
