News: Girl and Girl announce debut album ‘Call A Doctor’ and spark things off with a very fine anthemic ‘Hello’.

Garage rock four-piece Girl and Girl today announce that their debut full length album, ‘Call A Doctor’ will be released on Friday, 24 May via Virgin Music Australia (AU/NZ) and Sub Pop (rest of world), and is available now for pre-order. To celebrate, the band release lead single and accompanying video ‘Hello’ as a rather tasty amuse bouche for the ears. And this all comes with a comprehensive tour that includes an appearance at this year’s prestigious SXSW in Texas.

‘Hello’ is a rambunctious slice of indie guitar pop pie that canters along with a high stepping trot – swaggering and poised with a jittery anxiety-ridden pace. Singer Kai James has a distinctive delivery that trembles and blisters with a Talking Heads/The Strokes New York sense of urgency.

James says of the track, which tells the story of a young man who requires daily consults with health professionals to rationalise his self-destructive thoughts and routines:

It’s about romanticising your own misery. Letting those deep, dark, dirty thoughts take over. Understanding that even if you could pull yourself out, you wouldn’t because the constant stress and worry is far too familiar and comfortable.

There is a cathartic, frenetic urgency, a louche and dry sense of humour, all of which is perfectly captured in the high voltage video directed by Tayla Lauren:

‘Hello’ is an enticing and very exciting taste of what’s to come, and is available to download and stream here.

‘Call A Doctor’ was recorded during a frenzied two-week creative process at Sundowner Sound in Melbourne, a two-story industrial complex where the band ate, slept and made music in marathon sessions with producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin, DZ Deathrays, The Drones). It is out on Friday, 24 May 2024 and available to pre-order here.
