Sydney Harbour is getting a serious dose of Chicago house this spring, with Green Velvet announced as the latest artist to take over THE POINT, Fuzzy’s open-air music series at Yurong / Mrs Macquaries Point.
The influential producer and DJ will headline the floating stage on Saturday, September 26, for a six-hour party running from 4pm until 10pm. Special guests are still to be announced, but Green Velvet comes armed with more than enough dancefloor history to make this one of THE POINT’s biggest dates yet.
For more than three decades, Green Velvet has occupied his own wonderfully eccentric corner of electronic music. The alter ego of Chicago producer Curtis Jones, he has moved between house, techno and the stranger fringes of club culture while maintaining a sound instantly recognisable as his own.
Tracks including ‘Percolator’, ‘La La Land’ and ‘Bigger Than Prince’ have long since moved into club-classic territory. They also tell part of the story of an artist whose influence stretches well beyond individual records, with Green Velvet becoming a fixture everywhere from sweaty underground rooms to enormous international festival stages.
That versatility should make THE POINT particularly well suited to him. There is something deliciously excessive about hearing ‘Percolator’ booming across a floating stage on Sydney Harbour as the sun disappears, and Green Velvet’s ability to shift between hypnotic house grooves and harder-edged club music gives him plenty of terrain to cover across the evening.
The show joins the growing program for THE POINT, which takes Fuzzy’s long association with Yurong / Mrs Macquaries Point and turns it into a seasonal series of individually curated events. Rather than operating as a conventional multi-day festival, each date revolves around its own lineup and musical identity.
Green Velvet’s arrival also comes as Fuzzy celebrates 30 years of shaping Australian dance music and festival culture. After three decades of his own spent bending house music into increasingly strange and infectious shapes, the pairing feels particularly apt.
Green Velvet plays THE POINT at Yurong / Mrs Macquaries Point, Sydney, on Saturday, September 26, from 4pm to 10pm.
