News: Joe Hearty Shares Confessional New Single ‘Down’ Ahead Of Debut Album

Scottish composer, arranger and producer Joe Hearty has released his fourth single of the year, ‘Down’, a vibrant, emotionally charged track that offers a glimpse into his forthcoming debut album of the same name, due October 16th, 2026.

Now based between London and Athens, the North-east of Scotland-born artist brings a dynamic blend of powerful pop production, vivid string arrangements and commanding vocals to the new single. Moving between sparse, stripped-back verses and expansive, hook-laden choruses, ‘Down’ balances lightness and exuberance with a deeper emotional undercurrent, reflecting Hearty’s self-described approach to songwriting as “direct and unguarded”.

At its heart, the track explores the difficult but necessary process of confronting grief, embracing vulnerability and finding a way through life’s most challenging moments. Rather than shy away from the discomfort of loss, Hearty approaches it with an openness that allows sadness and exhilaration to coexist, capturing the unexpected sense of release that can come with accepting pain.

“Getting through life’s heaviest moments requires us to face them head-on… whether we want to or not. That’s what Down is about – recognising that your own pain is part of the healing process, recognising that it’s important to be kind to yourself when you feel completely insane. With the lyrical content and production, I wanted to strike a balance between sad and triumphant… because that’s what it felt like for me, surrendering to my own grief felt, somewhat ironically, euphoric.”

Self-produced and recorded across Liverpool, London and Athens, ‘Down’ showcases Hearty’s instinct for ambitious arrangements and melodic sophistication. Drawing inspiration from Paul McCartney’s melodic sensibility, Scott Walker’s dramatic range and Jon Brion’s playful approach to production, the single finds its own distinctive space between grand pop flourishes and intimate, personal storytelling.

Released via Slow Learner, the single introduces the wider world of Hearty’s debut album, which arrives on October 16th. Written during a period of profound personal change two years ago, the record took shape while the artist was in transit, with ideas developing across planes, train journeys and boat trips. These moments of movement and reflection provided the backdrop for a collection of songs that examine grief, memory and the strange familiarity of everyday life after losing someone close.

Recounting memories of his late father while considering the ordinary routines that continue in the aftermath of loss, Hearty approaches deeply personal subject matter without allowing it to become overwhelming. Instead, poignant lyrical reflections sit alongside playful, charming production, creating a compelling contrast between emotional weight and musical brightness. It is this tension that gives ‘Down’ its character, transforming an exploration of pain into something unexpectedly life-affirming.

With its combination of bold pop sensibilities, expressive instrumentation and candid songwriting, ‘Down’ sets the stage for a debut album that promises both emotional depth and a distinctive musical identity. Hearty will celebrate the release with a show at London’s The Old Library on October 22nd, offering an opportunity to experience the new material live just days after the album’s arrival.
