After days of teasing fans on social media, Powderfinger have finally confirmed what Australian music lovers have been waiting to hear. The Brisbane rock veterans are reuniting for a national tour in September 2027, marking their first full-scale Australian tour since calling it quits in 2010.
The announcement brings Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John Collins and Jon Coghill back together, more than 16 years after their farewell performance at Brisbane’s Riverstage. For a band that spent much of the 1990s and 2000s dominating Australian rock, it’s a significant return.
Formed in Brisbane in 1989, Powderfinger grew from alternative rock outsiders into one of the country’s most successful bands. Their breakthrough third album, Internationalist, topped the ARIA Albums Chart in 1998, beginning a run of five consecutive number-one studio albums that included Odyssey Number Five, Vulture Street, Dream Days at the Hotel Existence and Golden Rule.
Along the way, songs including My Happiness, These Days, On My Mind and Lost and Running became fixtures of Australian radio, cementing the band’s place in the country’s musical landscape.
When Powderfinger announced their split in April 2010, they maintained they had reached the end of what they wanted to achieve together. Their subsequent Sunsets Farewell Tour closed a chapter that had spanned more than two decades, with the band largely staying true to their decision. A one-off virtual reunion in May 2020 for the charity livestream One Night Lonely offered fans a brief glimpse of the five musicians together again, but a return to the touring circuit remained off the table.
The September 2027 reunion will see one of Australia’s defining rock bands return to the stage, with a catalogue that remains firmly embedded in the country’s musical identity. After years of speculation and the occasional reunion rumour, Powderfinger are finally ready to pick up where they left off.
