News: LATE 90s drop new single ‘Low’

Perth alt-rockers LATE 90s have shared their new single Low, a track that wrestles with the cycle of self-hatred and the search for self-worth.

“Low is about that internal monologue of self love and self loathing – knowing you’re heading off course and wanting to be better but you just don’t know how to be a better version of yourself and then beating yourself up for it.”

Written during a period of low self-esteem for vocalist and guitarist Stephen Loreck, the single grew into a reflection on the struggle of waiting for something — or someone — to pull you out of a rut. “Sometimes you don’t know where to start to get better,” Loreck explained. “Maybe you’re waiting for someone or something to happen for you to get your shit together.”

Recorded at Perth’s Emerald Room Studios, Low marked a first for LATE 90s with Loreck taking on production duties. The DIY approach gave the band time to experiment: re-recording vocals and bass multiple times, trying out new ideas in the studio, and involving live sound engineer Emmett Carroll to provide technical guidance and additional input. Mixing came from Carroll, with mastering handled by Brodie Stewart.

Musically, Low continues LATE 90s’ push to blend the heaviness of Deftones with the melodic drive of Paramore and the emotional intensity of Basement. With more than 2.1 million streams and support slots alongside Neck Deep, Taking Back Sunday and State Champs, the band’s profile continues to grow.

Their inclusion on the 2025 BIGSOUND line-up in Brisbane this September will see them bring the new track to the stage.
