Grace Shaw, better known as Australia’s indie-pop darling Mallrat, is one of those artists you love with your gut. If you’ve been paying any attention to the Australian music scene, you’ll know her as the sharp, genre-defying voice behind hits like ‘Groceries’ and ‘Charlie’. Now, as she gears up for the release of her new album ‘Light Hit My Face Like a Straight Right’ on February 14th, Mallrat is showing us exactly what her transformation from bedroom-pop artist to global pop star looks like, complete with Aus, USA and UK/EU tours.

Since dropping her debut album in 2016, Mallrat’s ability to infuse magic into the mundane has been her signature – She is an expert at the delicate art of suburbia story-telling. Her last album, ‘Butterfly Blue’, was a standout in 2022, an intricate blend of emotional depth and indie-pop innovation. But it was more than just a moment in the spotlight, it was a declaration that she was no longer just a voice from the bedroom.

Now, with ‘Light Hit My Face Like a Straight Right’, Mallrat is stepping into a new era. The record’s title itself is a nod to the powerful force of fate and the unexpected twists life throws your way. “I love the idea you can let your fate be decided by rays of light,” she says, capturing the core of the album’s theme: Human connection and the mystery of what we can’t control.

If Mallrat’s past work made her a star, ‘Light Hit My Face Like a Straight Right’ is the kind of album that solidifies her as an artist of serious longevity. For someone who’s already collaborated with the likes of Azealia Banks, Post Malone, and The Chainsmokers, this record feels like the next big leap and Australia is clearly so proud.

Mallrat has also just been announced as Kylie Minogue’s special guest for the upcoming Tension Tour.
