Brighton’s Matt Finucane returns with the visceral garage-rock fizzer ‘Dead Artform’, the lead single from his forthcoming album Ruination, due for release on 30th October, with a physical release to follow.
‘Dead Artform’ is a boxy, gritty and urgent offering, driven by fuzzy, layered guitars, drums that crackle with live-room energy and pounding bass. Messy, raw and immediate, the track is propelled by Finucane’s commanding delivery and lyrics that bring a colourful sense of irony to his vision of the shadowy AI dystopia the world is moving towards.
The upcoming album continues that descent into darker territory. Finucane describes Ruination as a record that “marches still deeper into the neo-goth, post-punk darklands. But even in the shadows, the same primal human truths hold sway: jealousy, despair, redemption… And you. In the end, this album is about YOU.”
Based in Brighton, Finucane has spent more than two decades operating in the darker underbelly of British music. Across a substantial catalogue of albums and EPs, he has developed a singular sound that has drawn comparisons to David Bowie, Mark E Smith and Lou Reed, combining angular guitars, brooding atmospherics and raw, introspective songwriting.
For Finucane, the record is less concerned with winning over an audience than confronting it. As he puts it, he “doesn’t want to be your friend. He doesn’t care about smashing that Like button. He just wants to show you the power of unholy noise.”
