Seventeen years after calling time on one of Australia’s most successful rock careers, Powderfinger are getting the band back together. Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, Jon Coghill and John Collins will reunite for a national tour across September and October 2027, ending years of speculation about whether the Brisbane five-piece would ever return to the stage.

And they’re not doing things by halves. The band will take a stadium-sized travelling big top around the country, hitting Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. Part rock concert, part travelling festival, the ambitious production will bring thousands of fans together under one enormous roof, with a rotating lineup of Australian support acts.

Powderfinger’s final performance took place on 13 November 2010, following a farewell tour that attracted more than 300,000 fans. Since then, the band’s seven studio albums and formidable catalogue have remained fixtures of Australian music. From My Happiness and These Days to Sunsets, On My Mind and Pick You Up, few Australian bands have produced so many songs that continue to resonate across generations.

The numbers tell their own story: five ARIA number-one albums, 18 ARIA Awards and 22 appearances in triple j’s Hottest 100, including two chart-toppers. Even in 2025, three Powderfinger tracks landed in triple j’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs of All Time.

The reunion wasn’t inevitable. Despite years of requests, the five members had resisted returning until the timing felt right for everyone. Now they’re ready to reconnect with longtime fans and introduce their live show to an entirely new generation, including their own children.

The tour will also champion Australian music, with Powderfinger handpicking established and emerging local artists for different dates. A major support announcement is expected during AusMusic Month in November.

Beyond the music, the band will partner with Mission Australia to raise funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness, with further details to follow.
