Sam Foster Smith has released his debut EP South West Summer, a collection of shimmering indie-rock that draws on coastal nostalgia, coming-of-age memories and the a euphoric energy skin to Sam Fender and The K’s.
The EP opens with its title track, ‘South West Summer’, before moving into ‘Go With The Flow’. Both tracks establish the record’s anthemic character, pairing soaring vocal melodies with power-pop guitar riffs and a sense of widescreen escapism. Across the two songs, imagery of deep blue water, coastal getaways and teenage freedom gives the EP an unmistakable summer atmosphere, with both tracks carrying the kind of festival-ready hooks built for a crowd to sing back.
‘Daedalus’ provides a shift in tone, introducing jangling guitars, pounding toms and a distinctly folk-leaning, Celtic influence. The change of pace highlights another side to Foster Smith’s songwriting, while still retaining the expansive vocal performances and guitar-driven sound that define the opening tracks. Lush strings add further texture, giving the song a sense of scale as it builds towards its soaring vocal passages.
The EP concludes with ‘Runaways’, a track that brings Foster Smith’s indie-pop instincts to the forefront. Influenced by artists including Sam Fender and Future Islands, the song combines infectious melodies with a polished, energetic arrangement, bringing together the different strands of the EP in a confident finale.
Reflecting on the record and the process behind it, Foster Smith says:
“South West Summer is a record that’s very dear to my heart. It’s a distillation of all the sepia-drenched memories I have from my time growing up within spitting distance of the tide line down south, and the growing pains I’ve endured since displacing myself in pursuit of a life lived through music.
Musically, I wanted to keep the lyric-focused, anthemic quality in the songs and do them justice with big arrangements, but also suffuse them with acoustic textures to make them sparkle and shine with a sense of nostalgia. As with all my music, I put these tracks together and arranged all the parts by myself in my living room – fuelled by coffee and big dreams – before taking them up to be tracked professionally at Gareth Nuttall’s Lounge Studios in Wigan. Gareth then mixed them, and Grant Berry mastered them. From the title track’s dive into being a teenage tearaway to the soaring coming-of-age arrangement of Daedalus, my hope was that these songs could be read as stories with or without music – I think I may have just managed it, but I’ll let you be the judge! Drink neat, with salt on your lips and sand between your toes.”
Based between the West Country and London, Foster Smith has spent less than two years building a reputation around refined, anthemic indie-rock. His singles have already accumulated thousands of streams, alongside radio support from BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, GigSlutz and Future Hits Radio, and press coverage from Mesmerized and FAME Magazine.
His live credentials have developed alongside his recorded work. Foster Smith has opened for The K’s, The Lilacs and The Assist, as well as selling out headline shows in London and across the South. His experience as a professional session musician has also seen him perform at major festival stages including the Isle of Wight Festival, Y Not Festival and Victorious Festival.
That background is evident throughout ‘South West Summer’, a record built around big melodies, detailed arrangements and the communal spirit of live music. Across four tracks, Foster Smith balances nostalgia with the forward momentum of an artist continuing to establish his own sound.
