News: Talon David Embraces Her ‘Villain’ Era With New Album

Nashville-born alt-pop and neo-soul artist Talon David has released The Villain, the first half of a fairy-tale themed double album that turns personal conflict, rejection and resilience into a theatrical, genre-bending collection.

Written, produced, arranged, engineered and performed by David, The Villain explores what it means to be cast as the bad guy in someone else’s story. Across eleven tracks, alternative rock, neo-soul, funk, house, pop-rock, retro R&B, reggae-pop and dark pop collide as David embraces the more confrontational side of her sound.

The project began with Make Me the Villain, written after David was scapegoated by music industry promoters for standing up for herself and fellow artists. What started as an angry response ultimately developed into the foundation for the album.

“Sometimes being the villain in someone else’s story is simply the price of refusing to play the role they wrote for you.”

That idea became particularly relevant after David moved from Nashville to the UK in 2022 without an established support system. As she navigated a new country and a new chapter of her career, she began noticing a recurring pattern of being framed as the villain by people whose expectations, jealousy or beliefs conflicted with her simply being herself.

Those experiences shape The Villain, which moves through rage, grief, loneliness, awkward encounters, fractured friendships, breakups and existential uncertainty before arriving at a sense of creative and personal freedom.

David’s theatrical approach is informed by her work as an actress and audiobook narrator, with credits including Bridgerton, Neal Morse’s progressive rock operas and more than 150 recorded books. She treats her music much like a manuscript, creating layered worlds that can be dramatic, funny, vulnerable and uplifting.

Her musical upbringing was equally varied. Raised by two professional performers, David grew up with classic rock, Motown, 2000s pop and Broadway cast recordings before gravitating towards the piano and developing a sound that has consistently resisted easy categorisation.

At 17, she won a nationwide GRAMMY Foundation songwriting contest for Deep Snow, earning an invitation to attend the 2017 GRAMMY Awards. Following a music degree, she developed her technical skills in recording and production and released her first commercial project, Talon, like the Claw, in 2020. She has since released three albums, three EPs and numerous singles, maintaining complete creative control over her catalogue.

On The Villain, David is joined by a group of musicians including guitarist Stacey David, bassists Pablo Arruda, Itaiguara Brandão, Bruno Migliari and André Vasconcellos, and drummers Christiano Galvão, Fernando Moreno and Bruno Werner.

The album’s songs each represent another part of its central story. Inner Banshee combines house and neo-soul with the grief and existential uncertainty David experienced while living in London, while Ghosted draws on James Brown-inspired funk to tackle the frustration of being ignored by collaborators.

Elsewhere, Awkward turns an uncomfortable dating encounter into pop-rock, Hero Is a-Slitherin’ challenges assumptions around identity and labels, and Where Goodness Grows imagines escaping an increasingly exhausting news and social media landscape.

The record takes a more vulnerable turn with Mosaic (All of You), a piano-led exploration of loneliness, before Neverland combines neo-soul and alt-pop with the chords of Human Nature. Better Friend offers a playful response to fake friendships and strategic competition, while Last of My Kind closes the album with a confident invitation to stop worrying about the what-ifs and trust yourself.

With The Villain, David turns the idea of the misunderstood antagonist into a vehicle for self-expression. Rather than apologising for taking up space, she uses the character of the villain to reclaim her own narrative, transforming difficult experiences into something energetic, theatrical and ultimately empowering.
