British singer-songwriter Tom Moriarty Turns the Page with Ambitious Fifth Album ‘Chapters’
British singer-songwriter and guitarist Tom Moriarty is set to unveil his long-awaited fifth studio album, ‘Chapters’, marking a significant new chapter in a career already defined by resilience, artistry and critical acclaim.
Hailed as “a performer of rare talent” by the Press Association and praised by Q Magazine for his “thoughtful roots rock”, Moriarty has steadily built a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling contemporary songwriters. His distinctive voice, described as existing “somewhere between the rage of Eddie Vedder and the soul of Ray Lamontagne”, has captivated audiences across Europe and beyond.
Following the success of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Fire In The Doll’s House’ and its equally celebrated follow-up ‘The Road’, which attracted admiration from music legends including David Crosby, Moriarty now returns with what may be his most ambitious work to date.
Years in the making, ‘Chapters’ sees the songwriter expanding his trademark acoustic folk-rock sound by embracing electric guitar for the first time on record. Drawing upon skills developed during his studies at the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles, Moriarty introduces elements of Southern rock while preserving the heartfelt storytelling and emotional honesty that have become hallmarks of his music.
The album opens with ‘Enemy Inside’, a powerful rock anthem that immediately signals a new direction. Driven by soaring guitar work and Moriarty’s weathered, soulful vocals, the track channels years of personal experience, hardship and perseverance into a performance that feels both urgent and timeless.
Elsewhere, the autobiographical ‘On The Road Again’ celebrates a life spent travelling and performing across the UK, Germany, Los Angeles, France and Italy. The song captures the freedom, adventure and personal growth that have shaped Moriarty’s journey, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into the experiences behind the music.
Throughout its 11 tracks, ‘Chapters’ showcases an impressive range of moods and influences. The intensity of songs such as ‘Hard Times’ and ‘Leaving It All Behind’ sits comfortably alongside the tenderness of acoustic-led moments including ‘She’s Like The River’ and ‘One Day’.
Perhaps nowhere is Moriarty’s artistic evolution more evident than on ‘You Are My Island’. The track highlights his emergence as a lead guitarist, moving effortlessly from sensitive, BB King-inspired phrasing to expansive climactic solos that reflect the influence of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Lindsey Buckingham and Prince. Having never featured his electric guitar playing on previous studio releases, the album offers fans a completely new dimension of his musicianship.
Moriarty adds:
“It was time to add electric guitar into the mix. I felt it was time to use the skills I’d learned at MI in LA to express myself and emotion in my music. Times had changed and in some of the songs I wanted to express more anger and aggression as a reflection of how the world had changed.”
Following a career-threatening accident and a dog attack that injured his left hand, Moriarty began writing many of the songs that would eventually become ‘Chapters’. The album serves as both a personal reflection and a testament to perseverance, charting a path from hardship towards recovery and triumph.
To bring his vision to life, Moriarty assembled an exceptional cast of collaborators. The album features drummer Evan Jenkins, known for his work with Eric Clapton and Van Morrison, bassist Thibault Guillen, violinist Georgie Leach of Seasick Steve’s band, Hammond organ player Rich Milner, who has performed with James Morrison, and acclaimed backing vocalists Louise and Melanie Marshall, whose credits include Jools Holland and Ray Lamontagne. Moriarty also contributes piano alongside his guitar and vocal performances, helping to create a rich and timeless sonic landscape.
Produced by Tristan Longworth, whose previous work includes collaborations with Jon Allen, the record was originally scheduled for release in 2020 before the global pandemic forced an extended delay. Six years later, its arrival feels all the more significant.
The result is an album that encapsulates a lifetime of experiences, influences and hard-won lessons. More than simply a collection of songs, ‘Chapters’ stands as a powerful statement of artistic growth and personal endurance – a record that may well prove to be the defining work of Moriarty’s career.
