News: VALERIE Expands the Universe of Her Debut Album with Cinematic Short Film ‘WITHIN THE CONFINES OF YOU: The Visual Odyssey’

Eighteen months after the release of her immersive debut album WITHIN THE CONFINES OF YOU, Miami-based indie artist VALERIE releases the new short film, WITHIN THE CONFINES OF YOU: The Visual Odyssey. Serves as a cinematic visual aid to the album, the new film highlights the record’s emotional landscape.

The project sees VALERIE teaming up with acclaimed Colombian filmmaker Nicolás Casanova, whose 2017 documentary El Culebro: La historia de mi papá remains a standout in Colombia’s modern film canon. The partnership marks a significant artistic evolution for VALERIE, who has long emphasised the visual nature of her music.

WITHIN THE CONFINES OF YOU was praised upon release for its brooding atmosphere and genre-defying sound. Anchored in dark-pop but laced with introspective songwriting and cinematic ambition, the album offered listeners a glimpse into VALERIE’s intricate emotional world—one shaped by both vulnerability and creative fearlessness.

Now, with The Visual Odyssey, she takes that storytelling a step further. The 45-minute short film offers a rich, immersive experience that weaves together VALERIE’s emotive performances with Casanova’s striking visuals. The result is an exploration of personal transformation—told through symbolic imagery, layered narrative, and moody, evocative aesthetics.

VALERIE explains: “I was trapped in the places first. The album is simply where I described them using my words and my voice. Now, I get to show you. From the early days, I knew that WITHIN THE CONFINES OF YOU needed to be a visual record. I even wrote out the story of the album for myself in narrative form before recording, kind of like a short story. In doing so, I hoped to keep the soundscapes accountable to my goal of bringing the conflicts, characters, and settings that drive the record to life. These videos have been in the works since the summer of 2023 when I partnered with filmmaker Nicolás Casanova to see the vision through.”
