The Crystal Set are about to embark on an extensive East Coast tour of Australia, and ahead of this, we are proud to premiere their new single ‘Don’t Peak Early’. It’s a timely piece of advice from a band that burned so brightly in the late eighties before staging a welcome and stunning come back last year with a series of live dates and nw, new material. After all, creativity does not have a use by date.
This represents the third in a row of new songs and sparks of with a welcome jingle jangle start and a rolling, ambulant bass. The lyrics display a sardonic sense of humour with Russell Kilbey’s iconic vocals delivering an autobiographical and wry view of the vicissitudes of life – such as letting a dictatorial yoga teacher’s class be blown off course by someone’s little fart. Kilbey assures me that part wasn’t autobiographical.
There is a reflective air to the lyrics matched with the humour:
We are tiny specks among a billion stars
What’s that strange thing purring? its my jaguar guitar
Can you feel it coming on.
Into your arms.
It’s a beautiful yearning track adding a little bluesy Stonesish flavour to the sparkle:
‘Don’t Peak Early’ is out tomorrow and available via all the usual sites.
The Crystal Set kick off their tour tomorrow night in Wollongong – full details below. Watch out for our review of the Sydney gig.
