Premiere: Melbourne’s The Woodland Hunters give us exclusive access in going all-out with Double-A sided release of ‘Golden Boy’ and ‘The Arrangement’ amid news of impending fourth album ‘Small Mercies’

Ten years together as a band, The Woodland Hunters, with an EP and three albums already in their arsenal, are now set to deliver their next communique from the Woodshed.

Their soon-to-be-released ‘Small Mercies’ album is today announced by a Double A side release of the singles ‘Golden Boy’ and ‘The Arrangement’.

Swamp-infested, snaky grooves and voodoo jungle beats tease an album that trades on the band’s famous devotion to 60’s inspired guitar jams, fuzz pedals and hooks you can hum on the way home.

But be prepared for some interesting left turns too. Says singer Andrew Tanner: ‘It’s easily the most diverse set of songs we’ve ever recorded. We were surprised at what came out of these sessions, and reckon listeners will be too.’

‘Golden Boy’ is a swampy slow-burner which rides on a super-greasy groove. It details the fall from grace and the slow fade of ‘the boy most likely’. Singer Andrew Tanner says ‘I was going to be a star AFL
forward in my high school days. Didn’t make it to the local club list. Sometimes dreams don’t come true. I
hope this song captures both the sadness and innocence of youthful aspiration gone wanting.
’ Listen out for possibly the dirtiest sounding guitar solo you’re likely to hear this year.

‘The Arrangement’ rumbles along on voodoo jungle beats and fuzzed-up guitars which propel the cautionary tale of a business deal with a guy called Nick that goes horribly wrong. The first time the band played this live, a punter came up and asked what that classic 60’s cover was. That’s a damn good recommendation. Drummer Leroy Cope reckons this track features some his finest ever tambourine work.

The singles (and other material) may be pre-purchased on the band’s Bandcamp page here.

Double A Side Single Launch: Union Hotel Brunswick, Saturday 15th July, 5pm.

Small Mercies: album out September 2023.
