Say Psych: EP Review: Throw Down Bones – 4EP

4EP is the new EP from Milan/London experimental band Throw Down Bones, marking a deeper shift into dark electronic / IDM territory for a band that has long sought out the middle ground between trance-inducing instrumental krautrock/psych and all-out industrial hedonism with the rave in its sights.

4EP is the follow-up to the band’s eagerly-awaited return in 2023 with LP Three. The seeds of this new four track EP being forged in the high-energy, heavy-duty live sets that came in support of the album – founding member Francesco Vanni on guitar/synths and backed by Marion Andrau on bass/synths and Raphael Mura on drums, who together on stage propelled those songs into something that could get even the most resilient of bodies moving.

Seeking to bottle that live intensity and dig further into the electronic impulses at its core, the band soon jumped back into the studio with day-one Throw Down Bones collaborator and producer James Aparicio: “This EP is the direct fallout of TDB’s recent live outings, the intensity of those sets became our blueprint. To chase that vibe, Frankie and I booked a South London studio full of classic analog synths and vintage hardware and took the band in for a four-day session. We worked together for those four days, drawing on the rhythmic propulsion of Underworld, the psychedelic textures of Daniel Avery, the modern UK grit of Overmono, the cold techno precision of Silent Servant, and the ghostly urban hauntology of Burial. These tracks are the raw result of that session.”

Opening with ‘Honest / Truth / Reality’ the coldwave origins of the TDB story shine strong, before the infectious kinetic energy takes hold and you lose yourself in its depths. ‘Juno Harm’ is a harsher, more abrasive offering with roots deep in the industrial sound and this continues into ‘No One Cares’, yet adds an almost disco edge with the beats penetrating deep. ‘Two Different Cubes’ takes a bit of all thats been before, churns it up and presents it new in a way that as soon as it finishes, has you reaching for the play button immediately.

Throw Down Bones defy categorisation and everything considered ‘the norm’, in all the best ways imaginable. In 4EP they experiment with sound in such a unique way you lose yourself in its waves, and want to listen over and over again to hear the parts you didn’t pick up on the time before. Truly pioneers of their craft.
