SEE: the animated video for the Appalachian loveliness of Sally Anne Morgan’s ‘Garden Song’

SOMETIME Black Twig Picker and half of leftfield roots reshapers House and Land, Sally Anne Morgan has just released the lovely and verdant animation to accompany her “Garden Song”, one of the highlights woven into her debut album as a a solo artist, Thread, which will be out on Thrill Jockey on September 11th (read our review on the afternoon of September 6th).

As with the song itself, in which Sally Anne extols the simple bucolic joys of her own patch of this Earth, the animation delights in an almost childlike wonder at the  life of plants, and is built around timelapse photography of Sally Anne’s own paintings.

The song itself comes in on a simple acoustic guitar pick, and is joined in expanding the melody by the almost sorrowful loveliness of Sally Anne on the fiddle. It’s not a complex tune, nor need it be: “Everything is green inside my garden, garden, garden / Nothing is a weed inside my garden, garden, garden,” she intones. Her plot is safe and Edenic. Her music is a warm and welcoming place to be. She burrs her Rs in an Appalachian, rhotic way, showing her roots.

The album sees her “implement conventions from bygone eras to craft work that honours and expands on those traditions … stringing together practices both ancient and modern and brimming with simple beauties.”

Thread will be released on mp3, CD and yolk-yellow vinyl on September 11th. Place your order with Thrill Jockey, here.
