In the run up to his Flying Wig album, due out on September 22nd on one of our favourite labels here at Backseat Mafia, Mexican Summer, Devendra Banhart has released a new single, Nun. Recorded in Topanga Canyon, Southern California with acclaimed Welsh musician Cate Le Bon as producer, it’s a perfect marriage of their psych folk stylings, with a proggy ambition and stripped back accompaniments – certainly on the evidence of this rather lovely single.

Repetitive in its almost chanted chorus, it bursts with charm – the lovely little melodic moments sharpened into focus by this persuasive bassline and leftfield chord changes, with these little percussive extras drawing the ear with their beautiful simplicity.

Of the track, Devendra says “Nun” was written in a Nunnery in Northern Nepal…  it’s a simple metaphor: we can run to something, run for something, run out of something… an archetype with plenty of elasticity.”

Check it out, here

Banhart recently announced openers for his world tour in the autumn, including Hayden Pedigo, Le Ren, Miho Hatori, Soma, Rogov, and John Moods, who will appear with Devendra at London’s Troxy on 25 November 2023.
