Dom Quincey returns with a new single, ‘Anything At All’, a cathartic and emotionally charged release that brings beautiful soundscaping and elegant melodic work.
The track finds him operating in a space where indie-pop immediacy collides with textured production which moves from the lo-fi distant drums and glitching opening, gradually building through subtle strings towards a wall of crunchy guitars and punching drums. Topped with the silky smooth heartfelt vocal of Quincey, the track showcases a distinct musicality, giving a taste of the upcoming EP.
‘Anything At All’ is cinematic yet restrained, holds a sense of scale through its clever dynamic contrasts and moving melodic choices. Confident and well paced, the track manages bring both a sense of raw energy whilst also retaining a radio-radio flare and most importantly a real emotional depth.
‘Anything At All’ also fantastically balances its electronic elements with live instrumentation – moving gracefully and effectively through moments of electronic ambience, to gritty explosions of distortion. Embellished with strings throughout, the track dances between genres with a freedom but a sense of calm and well rooted identity.
Speaking about the track, Dom Quincey explains its origins and shifting shape over time: “The song started as I was playing around with a guitar tuning used on Joni Mitchell’s ‘Hejira’. I loved how open and unresolved it felt. I wrote the first verse and took it to my friend Coby, who helped me restructure the chords. We made a draft of a song, but it didn’t feel reflective of where I was at the time, so I sat with it and wrote the rest of it a few months later. I took it to Evil Genius, who produced the song with me and helped to refine its contrasting textures. ‘Anything At All’ is a song about feeling lost and disillusioned through turbulent times.
The lyrics tread a line between fantasy and reality, so I wanted the production to embody both digital and organic elements. I was inspired by the glitchy, minimalist production on some of James Blake’s early work, as well as the distorted, earthy sounds used by grunge bands of the 90s. This disjointed sonic palette reflects a push and pull between the fragmented states of mind explored in the song.”
Across his recent work, Dom Quincey has continued refining a sound that blends contemporary alt-pop production with 90s grunge textures and folk-inflected songwriting. Sitting somewhere between the introspective lyricism of mid-2000s indie folk and the melodic melancholy of modern indie, his music lingers in emotional liminal space where longing, introspection and existential questioning collide.
With an upcoming EP on the horizon, Quincey is definitely an artist to keep an eye on over the coming months.
