It’s been two years since Dominic Breen impressed us here with a string of impressive single culminating in the glorious album ‘Blue Volume’ (reviewed by me here), released through the magnificent Double Drummer label. He is back at last with the scuzzy low-fi buzz of ‘The Pits’ – an angry, dirty track with a barbed-wire spine that has a hedonistic, bacchanalian snarl about it, with a Velvet Underground ominous drone attack.
Breen’s vocals sneer and spit with a seething, burning anger as the guitars are slightly off kilter and twisted, ominous and foreboding. Breens snarls where did I go wrong? I thought we were moving along, in a wrought tale of love gone wrong and betrayal. Breen’s heartfelt expressive loss – it gives me the shits, I’m in the pits – is raw and visceral, matching the intensity of the guitars as the song reaches a crescendo. It’s fantastically naked stuff, unadorned, brutal and cathartic:
