Trevor Phelps returns with ‘Old Friend’, a glorious second chapter in the story of his forthcoming album, Small Town.
Where ‘Home Now’ arrived with a rip-roaring sense of momentum, ‘Old Friend’ takes a more patient approach. Its chorus snaps into place with a sharper melodic hook, while retaining the indie-pop instinct that has become synonymous with Phelps’ songwriting. The result is a track that feels both immediate and reflective, nostalgic without becoming weighed down by the past.
At the heart of ‘Old Friend’ is an unusual conversation between past and present. Rather than imagining himself speaking to the person he once was, Phelps reverses the premise, allowing his younger self to look forward and question the life that eventually unfolded.
Discussing the track, Trevor Phelps explains: “‘Old Friend’ is the second single from my upcoming album, Small Town. I wrote it from a perspective I don’t hear very often. Instead of writing a letter to my younger self, I imagined my younger self writing a letter to me.
As we get older, we spend a lot of time reflecting on who we used to be, but I wanted to explore what it would feel like if that younger version of me could see where I ended up. The song is filled with the expectations, dreams, and questions I had growing up, while acknowledging how much life changes the further you get from those moments.
At its core, “Old Friend” is about growing older without realizing how quickly it happens. It’s about watching your definition of success, home, and happiness evolve over time, and coming to terms with the fact that not every promise you made to yourself survives adulthood. Rather than mourning that change, the song embraces it with nostalgia, curiosity, and gratitude for the person you once were.
As the second chapter of ‘Small Town’, ‘Old Friend’ continues the album’s themes of growing up, leaving home, and learning that the places and people that shaped you never completely leave you even if they begin to feel like old friends.”
That sense of place is central to Phelps’ musical world. Hailing from Van Buren, Arkansas, his songwriting draws on the particular experience of growing up somewhere where the future can feel both close and impossibly distant.
