Italian producer and multi-instrumentalist Mouth Water shares the shimmering new single ‘Smoke’, a dreamy, vibrant new single via Through The Void Records.
Bringing a rich synth-pop aesthetic with new wave undertones and dream-pop sensibilities with an undercurrent of experimentation, ‘Smoke’ creates an otherworldly listening experience rooted in emotion, escapism, and introspection. Opening with a wash of vocoder treated vocals, the track opens out with a spacious soundscape of tight 808 beats, pulsing electronic bass and lush synth pads. Topped with the delicate and hypnotic melodic vocals, the track grows towards an unexpected key change in the chorus, highlight the alternative, 6 music friendly approach to Mouth Water despite the light and breezy ‘pop’ feel.
Ethereal and melancholic, yet danceable and vivid, the track grows throughout before ending in a wall of layered arpeggiators and swelling analogue synth lines.
Speaking about the track Mouth Water explains: “Smoke was born from the urge to tell a story of escape — a quiet rebellion. It’s about a girl trying to leave her past behind, crossing borders with a suitcase full of smoke — a hint that she might not be who she says she is. For me, it’s a hymn to freedom, but also a bitter reflection: today, we can’t truly disappear. The past follows us, even when we think we’ve outrun it.”
Behind Mouth Water is Lawrence Fancelli, a Florence-based producer whose work continues to draw acclaim for its stylish blend of analog instrumentation and electronic aesthetics. Having performed at Primavera Sound 2024 and opened for Röyksopp, the solo artist has already built a feverish fanbase that grows with every release.
Following the new single, Mouth Water is set to join Sophie and the Giants on tour in Italy in the coming months.
