Track: Jodie Nicholson – What If I

Ellen Dixon

Ahead of the release of her brand new album ‘Safe Hands’ on May 10th 2024, acclaimed North East songwriter and producer Jodie Nicholson shares her latest single ‘What If I’ via Quiet Crown / Absolute.

Jodie Nicholson comments:

“With ‘What If I’, I remember thinking that I didn’t want to lose sight of why I love making music, what made me want to start releasing music in the first place. I think I was feeling quite under pressure to write and make good music, ironically for this record, and all the far-ahead planning that comes with being an artist was really getting to me. Writing ‘What If I’ felt like a remedy to all that.”

It’s a late-night beauty with vocals at almost whispering level and the hesitant strumming of a guitar. Twinkling synths and a soft pound of a drum enhance the late-night intimacy of the lyrics before it goes all 80s drenched in shimmering distortion. Nicholson’s talent is to craft such wonderfully atmospheric images with her music.
