Hailing from the heart of Berkshire, Rila’s Edge are back with the infectious new single ‘Undone’.
‘Undone’ marks a bold step forward for the five-piece, who have quickly risen from humble beginnings in a small studio to selling out shows and headlining festival stages across the UK. Since their debut in 2021, Rila’s Edge have attracted a loyal following with their irresistible blend of indie-rock grit and anthemic flair, making waves in the UK indie scene.
Made up of childhood friends and college mates Alfie Harris, Ollie Hedin, Jacob Green, George Maclean, and Charlie Kennedy, Rila’s Edge have developed a dynamic chemistry that fuels their collaborative sound. This synergy is evident in ‘Undone’, produced alongside their trusted collaborators, Jordan Timms and Max Smith from Numen Studios (VC Pines, The Hunna), as well as Max Helyer, guitarist and songwriter for You Me At Six. Together, they’ve crafted a track that not only builds on their signature sound but pushes their boundaries even further.
‘Undone’ opens with an understated sense of melancholy, anchored by tight, boxy guitar tones and pulsing drums. The track gradually explodes into its anthemic, emotionally charged chorus, where the band’s signature blend of infectious energy and raw vulnerability shines through. The track’s progression is nothing short of dynamic, steadily building up before diving into an explosive middle eight, where fuzzy guitars and yearning vocals provide a cathartic release. The track culminates in a climactic final chorus, leaving a lasting impact with its wall of sound.
Ollie Hedin, who penned the lyrics for the track, delves into the personal experiences that inspired it. He explains: “We wanted to capture the same energy as a track like ‘1979’ by The Smashing Pumpkins, but if early U2 recorded it.
The lyrics were written when I was suffering with depression and feelings of low self-worth. I had also just entered my first proper relationship and was completely in love. With those two events happening, I kept thinking about how people say ‘you need to love yourself before you can love someone else’. I felt like that statement didn’t ring true for me at the time and I hadn’t ever heard anyone dispute the saying before, so I decided to write about how love and low-self worth interact.
The verses are the inner reflections and the chorus is the expression of the reflection. Musically, I wanted the verses to sound like an old rock and roll track from the 50’s and then explode into a big, open, indie chorus.
We had a lot of fun recording this track and went a bit crazy using all of Max Helyer’s equipment to get mad delays and really crisp sounding guitars. The sonic compass of the band is starting to point more towards alt-rock with fuzzy grunge flourishes and we think this is a perfect track to start pushing in that direction.”
With ‘Undone’, Rila’s Edge continue to solidify their place as one to watch in the indie-rock world, pushing their sound into exciting new territory while staying true to the raw energy and emotional depth of their first releases. As they head into 2025, there’s no doubt that Rila’s Edge are poised for greater things.
