Track: Tasty Brisbane quartet Babaganouj want to know ‘What Planet Do You Come From?’ – a zesty, tangy aperitif to their newly announced debut album.

It has been a while since we’ve heard from the terrific Brisbane quartet Babaganouj and the wait has been rewarded by the release today of their new single ‘What Planet Do You Come From?’, along with news of their debut album ‘Jumbo Pets’ due for release in early 2023.

In the intervening time, bass player/vocalist Harriette Pilbeam veered off with her successful solo project Hatchie while the others (Charles Sale on guitars/vocals, Ruby McGregor on guitars/vocals and George Browning on drums) got on with other stuff that happens in life.

The band is back together and sounding better than ever. ‘What Planet Do You Come From?’ is a gorgeous rich and luscious pop track – introduced by layers of harmonies before jangling guitars romp in with a driving rhythm. The sound is mature, studied and anthemic with a barbed wire spine that scissor kicks its way into your consciousness before ending in a squall of feedback. Sale’s main vocals are impassioned, wry and filled with an insouciant, punky attitude:

It’s great to see this band back and doing what they do best: serving antipodean-flavoured indie dream pop treats. The track and the forthcoming album are being released through those legends Coolin’ By Sound, curator of some wonderful sounds including bands that have graced our pages, Adam Gibson and Full Power Happy Hour.
