Track: The Somedays are back with another two shots of extraordinarily sixties-laced goodness with the garage pop of ‘She’s A Storm’ and the exquisite dream pop of ‘Thoughts Fade Away’

The Somedays hit us with a double tap on their debut back in August, and they are not band to rest on their paisley-coloured laurels. They are back with another double release and providing incontrovertible evidence that the debut was no fluke, not are they a flash in the pan.

This time, lead single ‘She’s A Storm’ see them donning their paisley shirts and winkle pickers with a scuzzy blast of hyper garage pop, tipping a lid to classic antipodean bands like Sunny Boys, The Stems and early Hoodoo Gurus. It’s a move away from the jingle jangle shimmer to a muscular three chord thrash: all swagger, attitude and mascara-lined eyes. And the thing is, they do it so well: replete with wild guitar solos, chanting backing vocals and a studied sneer:

Then to defy expectations, we are sent into a hypnotic psychedelic whirl with ‘Thoughts Fade Away’ – a coasting melodic delight that recalls elements of Underground Lovers or even The Byrds with a yearning delivery and organ bedrock. It’s a beautiful track – starting with a quiet drone before morphing into jingle jangle finery that sounds like a band that is well into its fifth album with its confidence and pose.

This is seriously one of the most exciting releases this year:

The Somedays are a little mysterious and have burst into the scene without much of a biography or back story and yet sounding like a seasoned veterans creating extraordinary good melody and anthems – the old Marrickville Sound.

They formed in South East Queensland in 2025, and three of the members are from the regional centre of Toowoomba, approximately 125 kilometres west of Brisbane. They are a 4-piece alternative power pop guitar band made up of songwriter/singer/bass player Alex van Dorsselaer, Adam van Dorsselaer (son of Alex) on guitar & vocals, Chris Lucas on guitar and vocals and Brent van Mourik on drums & percussion. Alex previously played in Brisbane bands in the early 1990s, supporting acts like Custard and Powderfinger.

Whatever the story, creativity does not have a use-by date.
