Album review: iogi – ‘everything’s worth it’: a beautiful collection of songs

The Breakdown

A beautiful collection of accessible but interesting songs, which are clearly the output of considerable work by Yogev. One can only wish they get the consideration they deserve.

everything’s worth it is a really refreshing album from Yogev Glusman, a lesser known psych pop artist from Tel Aviv, and admittedly an ambitious one – but by now it’s clear that the divide from what is considered amateur and “professional” is completely blurred.

everything’s worth it (sic) is as bit as professional as you can expect, with sweeping guitar riffs and clear-cut sounds, no different from what you would expect from, say, a mellowed down Tame Impala album.

Equally inspired by the Real Estate movement and by the 60s’ revival (“all your weight on me”, the Beatles-esque “symphony of blue”), iogi is an act that is able to entertain and surprise at the same time, to connect with the past, the present and the future at the same time.

Classy arrangements populate these songs, as the mild synth fireworks in “evolution of the heart”, interacting with pulsating bass, not to mention of course the staccato, funky guitars in beautiful single “you/me/everyone” and in “oh yes” and “disney world”.

Yogev’s songwriting is a perfect match, growing more entertaining from his debut, the ceiling, striving towards a sort of “universality” that was absent there. Every song transmits a passion for music, including the title track, a soul ballad that’s partly early Phoenix and partly tunes with the current independent scene (Small Forward, Ducktails, late Beach Fossils). “bliss” also plays well in that court.

Overall, a beautiful collection of accessible but interesting songs, which are clearly the output of considerable work by Yogev. One can only wish they get the consideration they deserve.

iogi’s everything’s worth it is available now digitally and on limited edition vinyl over at Bandcamp.
