Candlemass was formed by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling in Stockholm, Sweden in 1984, and is well known for its epic doom metal, having a great influence over a generation of the genre’s subsequent  greats – Candlemass themselves taking a large influence from Black Sabbath. ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ is a true genre classic, with every track a monument of timeless and finely crafted Doom. This is one of the quintessential, definitive Doom Metal releases, immortalising the band in the annals of music history & creating the foundations of a legacy spanning over thirty five years.  Going against the grain of bands at the time using speed to bolster their metal with the ongoing rise of  thrash in Europe and the US, Candlemass eschewed this direction, and formed a phenomenon of their  own through the latter part of the decade and beyond with their slow & spellbinding atmospherics.  ‘Epicus…’ was recorded at Thunderload Studios in 1986 and was released later that same year, with the  grand and inspiring vocals for the debut handled by Johan Längqvist. Leif Edling comments: “EPICUS was our first, and perhaps also the best. I have no clue what we did there in the studio deep under the Stockholm subway, but some sort of magic was created. This is a record I would …

So, the first gig of 2022 for me and it’s an absolute beast of a line up when it comes to a who’s who in the world of British heavy metal, each having put in a shift of over 40 years to date, mind blowing I know !  As the evening descended upon us and …

Heard about ‘paying your dues’– well Gonora Sounds leader and inspiration Daniel Gonora’s back-story makes him a bone fide member of the dues-paying club. Twenty years ago the blind guitarist and song writer was a key player in Zimbabwe’s ground-breaking Jairos Jiri Band, a group that tragically imploded as successive members passed away. Forced to …

The Stranglers have played a venue in Glasgow every time they toured the UK. That means, for the past 45 years, it has been a main stay for the band and there’s a reason for that, if you can make it in Glasgow, you can make it anywhere! It’s a tough nut to crack but …

We’ve been huge fans of Greta Stanley for a number of years now and it has been fascinating to watch the development of this artist hailing from the far north of Queensland. Her debut album ‘Full Grown’ was released back in late 2017 and this was followed by an EP ‘Sun In My Eyes’ in …

Last year, Darren Cross released the visceral album, ‘Distorder’, which I described as: …a brilliant expression of our times: discordant, unsettling and at times bleak, but delivered with a swagger and a panache. Cross puts on display his musicianship and creativity, creating something dark and elusive yet touched with a certain element of wry amusement. …
