Live Review: Stone Cold Abyss / Scarred By Truth – NE Volume Music Bar, Stockton 08.01.22

A night of metal was promised with three bands originally on the line up Scarred By Truth, Graviter and headliner Stone Cold Abyss. Unfortunately as seems to be the recent theme, Graviter had to pull out due to Covid related issues.

Tonight would also be Yorkshire’s Scarred By Truth 3rd gig, not that you could tell from these veteran musicians. Filling the stage this 5 piece delivered some perfect thrash that had the small crowd of young metal heads going crazy as the chugging guitars and heavy drumming had many a circle pit going. Due to the loss of Graiter both bands had to extend their set lists to fill the night. This saw Scarred… attempting a couple of new songs that they hadn’t rehearsed as a full band. Nonetheless the tracks where played with professionalism that you can only get from hard work, and you couldn’t tell if they missed a beat throughout. Focussing on real world issues and mental health the guys pulled out some serious quality tonight with the lead guitarist laying down so impressive lead work. They bring a fresh take on the thrash sound.

Stone Cold Abyss are a young four piece from Hartlepool who brought their own fan base along, which I joined as soon as they opened with their first track. The noise out of this band was incredible with a hint of Pantera in their grooves. Starting with just the one guitar the band added another to the onslaught as their lead singer picked up his guitar adding an extra onslaught to the heavy mix and combining with his dual vocals going from guttural to clean. It was his energy that infected the music had the Dr Martin wearing crowd under their spell tonight. They demonstrated a maturity and confidence that had them owning the stage which coupled with their song writing prowess they made each song standout rather than a set list of the same mundane noise.

Overall the night was a huge success with fantastic performances from both bands who both look to have a great live career ahead of them.
