Ahead of their debut album ‘Portraits’ release, on June 1st via Counter Records, Maribou State have given people a taste of what to expect, in the shape of a new song, Clowns. The London duo, Chris David’s and Liam Ivory have been on the rise due to a string of well received EPs, as well as remixing artists including Kelis, Lana Del Rey, Crookers, Kastle and Ultraista with their soulful and intricate electronic soundscapes.
It opens with this immediately intoxicating piano led beat over these gently tumbling beats, and sugared with these snatches of strings. Over the top is this ethereal vocal, provided by the bands good friend Pedestrian (2nd Drop / Born Electrics) who’s manages to mix the delicate with the emotive to produce something rather lovely. From there the whole thing is alternately doused in echo and submerged, as more and more strands are added to the whole.
On this evidence, ‘Portraits’ is going to be a must have.
