Last year’s album release ‘Spirits Flying Home’ (reviewed by me here) from iconic guitarist, producer and composer Cam Butler was described by me as a beautiful elegiac album, sparse and open, consisting entirely of sparkling guitars interspersed with ambient movements borne on a shimmering drone. Butler has now announced a follow-up album entitled ‘World Forever’ due for release on 1 May 2026 and has graced us with the first track off the album, ‘Clear Infinity’.
‘Clear Infinity’ is dramatic, anthemic and bold – a 28-piece string section stabbing in the ether with storms of feedback and percussion, underpinned by a grand organ and a filigree of scything guitars. It’s a pulse-quickening sonic journey, operatic and theatrical, that seems to roam over a wild untamed soundscape under dark foreboding skies.
Butler says of the track:
The song ‘Clear Infinity’ to me feels exhilarating and at the same time mysterious too. When I was writing the piece I wanted to create an exciting, musical world that used the grand scope of the Town Hall pipe organ supported by fuzz guitar, bass, drums and a soaring 28 piece string orchestra to create something that is super special, melodic and powerful.
It’s a satisfying and cathartic blast – great instrumentals never need words to express emotions as evocative as this:
There will be a limited pressing of 300 copies of the new album available on ultramarine blue vinyl – you can pre order it here.
Butler will be launching the album with a free concert in Melbourne on 22 May 2026 at the Melbourne Town Hall complete with the starring Grand Organ that features in the album.
Butler has had a prodigious career having his work played on Australian and French television. As a guitarist, he has collaborated with Melbourne musicians such as Angie Hart, Hugo Race, Ned Collette, Roller One and Charlie Marshall. In 1998, Cam founded the three-piece instrumental band, Silver Ray, who were active until 2008. From 2010, Butler worked as a guitarist, co-songwriter and producer with Australian musical legend, ex Died Pretty singer, the late Ron S. Peno, forming the band, Ron S. Peno and The Superstitions.
