News: Mortiis and Nytt Land announce Australian co-headline tour with TiR

A different strain of heavy music arrives in Australia this November, as Mortiis and Nytt Land join forces for a co-headline run, bringing their Southern Ritual tour across the country with support from TiR.

For Mortiis, the tour marks a shift in presentation. Known initially as a member of Emperor before moving into a solo career that helped define dungeon synth, he returns this time with a full band setup. The focus will draw from The Smell of Rain alongside material from across his catalogue, translating work that has often existed in isolation into a more collective live format.

Nytt Land

Sharing the bill, Nytt Land make their first trip to Australia. Their approach sits at the intersection of ritual and reconstruction, drawing on Norse mythology and early texts, with performances built around traditional instrumentation and vocal techniques. The use of Old Norse language and instruments such as kantele and talharpa places their work closer to historical interpretation than conventional metal structure, even as it overlaps with adjacent scenes.

Opening the tour, TiR — the project of Turkish multi-instrumentalist Oytun Bektaş — brings a quieter, more introspective counterpoint. Working within a space that blends dungeon synth and folk, the project leans into atmosphere over volume, building slow, cinematic arrangements that sit comfortably alongside the headliners without mirroring them.

Taken together, the tour maps a particular corner of the broader heavy and ambient spectrum — one that prioritises texture, mood and historical reference over immediacy. It’s a lineup that feels deliberately curated rather than assembled, drawing a through-line between artists who operate at the edges of genre.
