After four years away from Australian stages, Gang of Youths are finally coming home. The Sydney-born, London-based band have announced two special performances at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall this August, marking not only their first Australian shows since 2022 but also their long-awaited debut inside one of the country’s most iconic venues.

Taking place on August 8 and 10, the concerts will see Gang of Youths unveil new material alongside songs drawn from a catalogue that has established them as one of Australia’s defining rock bands of the past decade.

Led by David Le’aupepe alongside Donnie Borzestowski, Jung Kim, Tom Hobden and Max Dunn, the group have built an extraordinary reputation for pairing emotionally unguarded songwriting with expansive, cathartic arrangements. Across three acclaimed studio albums, they have explored grief, family, identity and belonging with a rare emotional honesty, earning a devoted global following in the process.

Their rise has been equally remarkable. From the breakthrough success of The Positions through the chart-topping triumphs of Go Farther in Lightness and Angel in Realtime., Gang of Youths have collected four ARIA Awards, topped the Australian albums chart twice, won Album of the Year at both the ARIA and J Awards, and become one of the country’s most acclaimed live acts. Along the way they have shared stages with Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons and Sam Fender while selling out venues across Australia, Europe and North America.

For Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music Ben Marshall, the band’s return carries particular significance.

“Praised for pairing crushingly intimate storytelling with monumental ambition, Gang of Youths have carved out a singular place in the Australian music landscape,” he says. “They have a rare ability to make the deeply personal feel universal, transforming stories of personal grief, vulnerability and belonging into powerful moments of collective catharsis.”

The Concert Hall performances represent another milestone in a career that has consistently defied expectations. Long recognised for transforming intimate songwriting into something vast and communal, Gang of Youths now bring that emotional intensity to one of Australia’s most revered concert spaces.

For a band whose music has always wrestled with questions of home, loss and identity, returning to Sydney after four years away feels especially fitting. These performances promise not only a homecoming but the beginning of the group’s next chapter.
