News: LION Shares new single ‘Break The Binary’

LION is on a mission to shatter societal norms with their electrifying hyperpop track, Break the Binary. Featuring punchy drums, hyperpop aesthetics, and sassy vocal lines, the song captures the boundlessness of identity. With a danceable four-to-the-floor beat, it exudes confidence and celebrates standing in one’s power, encouraging listeners to embrace the infinite possibilities of existence.

LION shares insight into the song’s creation, saying, “I was inspired by one of my trans pals who talked about boundlessness in one of their Insta captions, from which lyrics just started pouring out of me. I put those lyrics to an unfinished beat I had on my laptop and everything just melded together.” The song reflects LION’s view of gender as multitudinous, mirroring the eclectic musical journey it takes. From hyperpop breakdowns to lush harmonies and synths, the track culminates in a euphoric final chorus. Themes of outer space and the intergalactic run through the song, re-imagining a world where everyone can express themselves freely, unfettered by societal constructs.

LION explains that Break the Binary played a key role in their personal identity journey, saying, “This track has guided me on my identity journey, coming to the realization that I’m genderfluid partly through the creation of this song.”

The track also pays homage to the ballroom community, with LION stating, “I want to pay tribute majorly to the ballroom community, both in Naarm (Melbourne) and across the world, pioneered by Black and Latinx trans women. Ballroom culture has profoundly influenced this song specifically. The collective freedom experienced at a ball encapsulates what Break the Binary is about—unapologetic expression. These communities are true families, out of necessity and survival. The way they instill confidence in each other, the spaces they cultivate to allow everyone to express themselves and live their true fantasies, it’s incredible.”

Produced with “magic touches” by Drew Gardner and featuring acclaimed guitarist Philly Voulanas, Break the Binary is the latest in a string of bold releases for LION.
