News: Quinny Unveils ‘Up The Dollar’ Video, Releases Debut Album ‘Outer Monologue’

Emerging Scottish indie up and comer Quinny, share the new video for ‘Up The Dollar’, the third track from his debut album Outer Monologue which is out now.

Known for his sharp, tongue-in-cheek lyricism and infectious guitar-driven sound, Quinny’s new album showcases the Elvis Costello-meets-buoyant indie sound that has seen him make gain acclaim to date. A prime example of this is the new single ‘Up The Dollar’ which carries biting satirical political commentary. Emphasising the tongue-in-cheek humour which stylises Quinny’s lyricism, the catchy melodies and urgent expressive delivery are matched by the energetic instrumentation.

Bringing together bouncing distorted synths, driving live drums and plucky bass, the track grows from its understated intro towards a infectious, expressive and anthemic chorus with a wall of distorted guitars and catchy vocal melodies. Building throughout, the track reaches an explosive guitar break before ending in a the ringing final guitar hums and a dull clap like that at the end of a poorly recieved public speech.

The new video for ‘Up The Dollar’ reflects Quinny’s irreverent sense of humor. “‘Up the Dollar’ was my attempt at writing a song from an alt-right perspective,” he says. “After all, that’s where the money is surely? Anyway, as is often the case with my songwriting, I couldn’t quite escape my own bias, and the tune ended up being more of a comedy piece. Though the lyrics can definitely raise a few eyebrows when taken on face value or out of context!” Quinny humorously adds that the track “probably comes with a disclaimer: ‘This song is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.’”

The music video complements the track’s sardonic tone with its offbeat visuals, bringing together cuts of footage of notorious money hungry cartoon characters and right wing political figures, adding a visual aid to the pointed lyricism.

Produced by the talented Robin Evans (The View, Dodgy) and Melbourne’s own Rowena Wise, the full album Outer Monologue was shaped by collaborations with several notable artists, including Marie Collins (The Vegan Leather), Graham McCusker (Marouli), and Kieran Logan (Kassidy), among others. Fans of Quinny’s work will recognize the multi-faceted nature of Outer Monologue, which not only showcases his knack for infectious, guitar-led indie-rock but also reveals his ability to blend profound reflections with biting wit. As a collection of tracks, the album is as reflective as it is fun, bringing moments of Quinny’s love for witty social commentary, and others which showcase emotive storytelling and inventive musical experimentation.
