News: Ruby Cannon Releases New EP ‘Ruby and the Cannons’

In a year that has unfurled a harmonious welcome for emerging artist Ruby Cannon, the Melbourne music scene braces itself for the unveiling of her much-anticipated debut EP, ‘Ruby and the Cannons’. This melodic voyage follows her impressive performance at the Laneway Festival in February, where she shared the stage with luminaries such as Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM, solidifying her position within Melbourne’s vibrant surf rock milieu.

Ruby Cannon’s journey into music traces back to the age of seven when her father gifted her the very first guitar on the shores of Phillip Island. Post high school, she embarked on a musical pilgrimage, enrolling at JMC Academy to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree. Here, she began crafting songs influenced by iconic bands like Fleetwood Mac, The Velvet Underground, and The Rolling Stones, ultimately discovering her distinctive sound amidst the sun-soaked, dreamy vibes of the ’70s.

Ruby and the Cannons, a four-track EP, serves as a testament to resilience and creativity, born during the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic when Melbourne grappled with stringent lockdown laws. Composed three years ago with just an acoustic guitar, these songs found their true form upon the formation of Ruby’s band, blossoming into a harmonious offering that promises to captivate audiences.

The EP is a tapestry of genres, seamlessly blending indie, surf-rock, desert, and ’70s sounds, encapsulating an infectious and jubilant energy within each track. The production showcases a rich blend of acoustic guitars, electric guitars, drums, synths, bass guitar, and Ruby Cannon’s enchanting vocals.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the release, Ruby Cannon shares, “I’m so excited to be finally releasing music that really feels like me. These songs are the sound I’ve been trying to find for a long time.”

Ruby Cannon’s debut EP marks a significant milestone as she forges her path in the music scene with a sound that holds immense promise.
