Track: Big Special Drop Something Special With New Track ‘Black Dog / White Horse’

Isaac Watson

Big Special have shared a new track, Black Dog / White Horse which is their latest single to be taken from their forthcoming debut album Postindustrial Hometown Blues, due on the 10th of May via SO Recordings. The track follows on from ‘Butchers Bin‘ and the first single ‘Dust off / Start Again

On the track Joe Hicklin comments:

“Black Dog / White Horse is about fear, about rumination, intrusive thoughts and cycles of depression. It’s about trying to figure out how to reach out when feelings of guilt and shame take hold. It’s about recognising these things in others, noticing the lost and undervalued, and their increasing numbers.

It comes from a thing I wrote years ago, about a burning snake travelling in the hot sun and a small wren flying high above it to block the heat and give it shade, taking the burden of the sun, because the little bird loves the snake and won’t see it defeated, for whatever reason.”

There seems to be no limit to the talents of Big Special. Black Dog / White Horse sees Hicklin treat us to his rather captivating croon instead of the sneering quick fire vocals from the previous singles. What the guys have delivered is a masterclass in atmosphere creating and emotive lyric writing, as they cleverly put into words what many people may be facing internally. If anything this track shows the band are not one trick ponies.
