Yo La Tengo have been on the forefront of indelibly melodic indie pop for decades and it is comforting to see their return with the announcement of a new album – their sixteenth – ‘This Stupid World’, due out on 10 February 2023 through Matador Records/Remote Control Records. As a first taste of what’s to come, they have released the single ‘Fallout’ – a blissed out melodic delight that shimmers with sparkles and energy.
Yo La Tengo’s signature melancholy and melody burn through the churning, rolling guitars and the atmospheric, hypnotic layers of sound. The single reflects a certain post-apocalyptic defiance – a reaction, perhaps, to recent times:
I want to fall out of time, Reach back, unwind.
It is certainly a welcome panacea for our times:
