Premiere: Killer Whale release new video and single ‘Drop Out’

Taken from their forthcoming album ‘Tastes Like Yesterday’, out via Devil in the Woods Records on September 18th, we’re delighted to premiere the new single and video from Louisiana’s Killer Whale right here on Backseat Mafia.

After spending time in New Orleans, the band drew on the likes of Dirty Projectors, even Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and deal in a hand of laid-back sort and alt-soul, to make a record that is causing quite some anticipation, especially here at our offices (My kitchen).

Of ‘Drop Out’, frontman Thomas Johnson says its about “realizing you may need a breath, a pause, or just something new, and dropping out of whatever that is. It’s about stepping away so you can get a better look at what might lie ahead.”

It’s a beautiful slice of hazy R&B/pop, with these ethereal vocals floating over gluey synths and this sprawling bassline. It has this melody that drifts into your ears, breaks your heart and kisses it better all at once.

The video focuses on the current break in live music, while still – as Johnson says “looking back at the beautiful moments we’ve had as a band and cherishing them more deeply than ever.”
