Premiere: Lil Seyi – Westside (La Felix) remix; NZ producer brings the funk to a Summer hit

Upcoming Auckland, NZ based producer / DJ La Felix has his new remix of US electro-soul singer-songwriter Lil Seyi’s Summer hit ‘Westside’ out tomorrow (3rd December) via the ever brilliant Kitsuné label, and we’re delighted to be able to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia this morning.

Of the remix, La Felix says “I was getting Toro y Moi vibes from Lil Seyi’s vocals so I decided to go towards that direction for the remix; involving lots of Psychedelic Disco & Funk elements.”

An inveterate crate digger, La Felix dug vinyl ranging from Jazz and Blues, through classic rock, Funk and Hip-Hop as well as syphoning off the gems in his mothers huge collection to inform his own work, forging a career that has seen him amass over 20m streams on DSP platforms.

His version of Westside pops and weaves, with utterly infectious funk flecked beats over Seyi’s warm syrupy vocal. Teetering between electro and funky house, it seamlessly moves over pads and electronic sounds, with glittering harmonies and melodies shining through as the gluey bassline sprawls all over it. Lovely stuff.
