Let’s get this straight from the start, firstly – yes it is. Secondly – it is nothing like any version you’ve (probably) ever heard. The folk song, famously a hit for The Animals in 1964, but recorded before that by the likes of Josh White and Leadbelly, is given a complete reworking, moved into 6/8 time and with the added aggression, searing guitars and throaty growl synonymous with Five Finger Death Punch.

It’s taken from the bands latest project, the two part opus ‘The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell – Volume 1 and Volume 2, both of which debuted in America on the Billboard album charts at Number 2, and featured two number 1 singles prior to the release of House of the Rising Sun in ‘Lift me Up’ and ‘Battle Born’.

It’s accompanied by a petrol soaked video shot in the Nevada desert, and is directed by the band’s guitarist Zoltan Bathony in conjunction with Thought Pirates Film’s Brian Neal. Zoltan explains the video’s idea as “The song’s lyrics are about gambling and drinking and we wanted to recreate those gun swinging outlaw poker scenes familiar from classic western movies, however I just couldn’t see us riding horses in the video so we shifted eras and went for a Mad Max-like post apocalyptic vibe with the cars and the bikes we ride anyway. We didn’t want any performance footage; the plan was to make the song sort of a soundtrack to a short story”.
