South London duo Funktionalust follow the release of their debut EP A Different Street this week with a new video, their first, for closing track Even. Early tracks Seats’, ‘Dots’ and ‘Likeability’ but interest on the duo, aka Sage Redman and Joe Gillick as they mixed up post-punk and electronica into something new and interesting, and early indications are this new material is another step forward for them.
Driven by this woody, abrupt percussion and slightly angular electro bassline, the track hammers away in the background, insistent and inexorably moving forward, which is in contrast with the angelic vocal line and drapes itself over the top, fuelled as it is by echo and rather delicious harmonies. Bow down before the new kings of hard edged but glitter coved electro.
Check out the video, directed by Matt Halsall and filmed in South Korea, it follows one mans late-night rampage through bars, karaoke joints, punching bags and (even) dance routines. Given his situation, isn’t that what we’d all do?
The South London duo of Sage Redman and Joe Gillick will also be playing an EP launch show on 11th June at Peckham Rye Wax, with further dates for this year to follow.
