Le Ren, aka Montreal folk artist Lauren Spear is newly signed to the Secretly Canadian label, and has released a new video for her first recording on the label, ‘Love can’t be the only reason to stay’.
The song is this dark, intimate waltz, with nothing but Spears rich vocal, subtle harmonies and a chiming guitar. It’s simple, yet emotive as she describes love turning into something unhealthy as she coos “I loved you, my darling // You know that it’s true // I loved you till you beat my heart black and blue // But I just can’t stand to be treated that way // No, love can’t be the only reason to stay.”
