Last year’s delightfully entitled ‘The Lord Is My German Shepherd (Time For Walkies)’ from the magnificent Ringlets (reviewed by me here) was followed by a few appearance across the ditch in Australia and a more recent announcement of a massive UK/European tour. And now, as icing on the cake, they have released a new single entitled ‘Hard Evidence’ through the legendary Flying Nun Records.
‘Hard Evidence’ reveals a slightly more refined and polished sound but filled with the same subtle sense of humour, intelligent lyrics and indie pop sensibilities. There is a delicious absurdity to the lyrics:
If you pull upon me tryna be a hard case
Then I’m gonna have to take you to the coal face
The coal face is where they’ve gutted out the whole place
Young brothers took my trousers, I’ve been short changed
Yes officer, he’s trying to be a hard case
Caught him with my trousers down lyin’ bold face
Said his daddy was a union man from auld days
Seen em eyeing up my Hamish brother, no way
The guitars ripple throughout and there are intricate time signatures and changes (perhaps an influence of current flavour of the month Angine de Poitrine?). It’s wonderfully eccentric and hugely enjoyable fare from one of the most exciting antipodean bands around.
Covering a wide base of subjects such as labour, collapse, and stolen trousers – the track is accompanied by a vivid immersive music video directed by Martin Sagadin, with the band performing with peak enigma and poise:
‘Hard Evidence’ was recorded over a day at Roundhead Studios with De Stevens and is out now and available via the link below and via all the usual download and streaming sites.
