It’s been five years since Australia’s iconic electronic band Cut Copy released original music, and they have returned with a sinuous new single ‘Solid’. An ambient liquid track that bubbles along with the smooth and velvet vocals, ‘Solid’ has a melancholic yearning air that creates a dreamy fugue.

The reassuring flow is commensurate with the themes.  Frontman Dan Whitford says of the track:

I wrote the song as a reminder to myself that things will be ok, even when life gets turned on its head and it feels like there’s no way forward. I hope in some small way it gives other people a little nudge forward in the direction of their dreams. Hang in there… We’ll be solid.

Written originally as an instrumental track, the feel is cinematic and open, a fitting return for the band.

‘Solid’ is out today through Cutters Records and The Orchard and available to download and stream here.

Born from a bedroom recording project by Whitford, and expanding to a full-fledged band with guitarist Tim Hoey, drummer Mitchell Scott and bass player Ben Browning, Cut Copy’s discography spanned six unique and explorative studio albums, countless remixes and more. 2008’s album In Ghost Colours, featuring “Lights & Music” and “Hearts on Fire”, received nominations for the ARIA Awards’ Best Dance/Electronic Album and Album of the Year at the J Awards.

2011’s ARIA chart-topper Zonoscope was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album of the Year at the GRAMMY Awards, awarded Best Dance Release at the ARIA Awards, and was named one of the best albums of 2008 and of the 2000s by Pitchfork. The band’s most recent album, 2020’s Freeze, Melt, showcased an expansion yet refinement in their sound, while maintaining a legacy unmatched in Australian music since their inception.
