Former Galaxie 500, Luna and Dean and Britta man Dean Wareham’s new single, You Were the Ones I Had to Betray, is a charming slice of folk-inflected indie pop that showcases his trademark blend of emotional vulnerability and melodic sophistication. Wareham’s vocals sound assured yet still carry that delicate fragility he’s always had, perfectly complementing the song’s unfurling arrangement.

Guitars evolve gracefully from acoustic intimacy to electric warmth, creating a dynamic bed for the track’s texture. Melodic exchanges from the strings add a bittersweet beauty, while electronic swoons and ethereal backing vocals give the song an otherworldly charm. It’s a track that feels timeless, dripped in both melancholy and elegance.

“I wrote this at the last minute, thinking about how love and friendship seem to actually invite betrayal,” Wareham explains of the track. “I didn’t really anticipate where the song would end up musically; it was transformed when Gabe Noel added the cello arrangement in the studio.”

The single offers an opening glimpse of Wareham’s forthcoming solo album, That’s the Price of Loving Me, out March 28 via Carpark Records. Reuniting with producer Kramer for the first time in 34 years, the album draws from their early collaborations while venturing into more intricate arrangements. If this single is anything to go by, it’s bound to be another gem in Wareham’s formidable career.
