Track: Elvis Costello – No Flag

‘No Flag’ is Elvis Costello’s new single. Traveling alone to the Finnish capital on February 16th, Elvis Costello worked for three days at Suomenlinnan Studio, a recording facility a twenty-minute ferry ride from downtown Helsinki.

Asked about the choice of recording location, Elvis explained, “I wanted to go somewhere nobody knew me. So, this is ‘The Helsinki Sound.’” “No Flag” was recorded by Eetu Seppälä – assisted by Tim Mikkkola – in Helsinki and mixed by Sebastian Krys in Los Angeles.

The instrumental credits list only: “Elvis Costello – Mouth, Drum, Fender Jazzmaster, Hammond Organ and Bass.”

This is trademark Costello, “I could write you verses and recite more than one But they’re not worth the paper that they’re written on” Great lyrics sang in that recognisable croak “No God for the damn that I don’t give”. He makes a lot of noise for one man and shows his song arrangement skills with the call and response between guitar and vocals before the anthemic chorus. Its a well produced track from a star that is still shining with all the vitriol and intelligence it always has done with. It’s better than ‘She’ and thats all that matters.
