Ancient Channels are a supergroup of sorts, consisting of members from the myriad of talented bands operating in Meanjin/Brisbane( including Terra Pines, Apparitions, and Deafcult), many of whom have been enthusiastically covered by us here at the antipodean outpost of Backseat Mafia.
Their new single ‘Chimera’ is a gloriously dense wall of shimmering sounds that quivers with an Antarctic intensity as the guitar creates shards of sound, the vocals distant and cold and delivered in a dream-like fugue. The result is something mysterious and ethereal with the feeling of a ritual or ceremony, building up to a chaotic thunder.
The band says:
‘Chimera’ is about the struggle to contain anger in an environment designed to amplify it
It’s a majestic and enigmatic release:
‘Chimera’ is out now through the marvellous False Peak Records with whom the band recently signed, and you can download and stream here and through the link below. It is off Ancient Channels’ forthcoming second album, Static Spirit, due in 2026.
You can catch the band live in False Peak’s forthcoming showcase at the Crowbar in Brisbane on 14 December with appearances from Apparitions, Dänmark and Fragile Animals – see details below. This is not to be missed.
