It’s a welcome return to the fray from Melbourne trio The Great Emu War Casualties (TGEWC), who today release their new single, the evocatively titled ‘Boutique Suite In Funky Fitzroy’. We last heard form TGEWC early this year when they released their EP ‘Vanity Project’ (reviewed by me here) and their new track is an effervescent lilting track imbued with the melodies and sonic architecture that we have come to expect from this band.
Partially recorded at James Cecil’s Super Melody World, ‘Boutique Suite In Funky Fitzroy’ went though many trials and tribulations, not the least one being the COVID lockdowns that beset Melbourne and, as Saskia Clapton explains, another more tangible and fiery event:
This track is dedicated to James Cecil’s Super Melody World, which burnt down one week before our sixth COVID-19 lockdown was lifted.
TGEWC have created complex liquid sounds and layers in this track, with singer Joe Jackson’s voice with its distinctive Australian tones urgent and yearning. There is an Arcade Fire bounce, but with the TGEWC’s unique drive and delicate aestheticism in the delivery:
