MGMT, the whimsical duo comprised of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, has been enchanting our eardrums for what feels like an eternity. Their latest musical gem, the absolute banger ‘Bubblegum Dog‘, serves as the second single released from their eagerly awaited album, ‘Loss Of Life’ which is set to grace our ears on February 23rd, 2024.

‘Loss Of Life’ marks MGMT’s long-awaited follow-up to the massive 2018 hit, ‘Little Dark Age’. It’s a 10-track album produced by VanWyngarden, Goldwasser, and Patrick Wimberly, featuring a collaboration with Christine and the Queens, marking the first-ever feature for an MGMT album. Longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann, takes charge of mixing the album. The themes explored in ‘Loss Of Life’ will unfold through a series of upcoming videos, promising to captivate us all with a talented roster of writers, producers, and directors.

In the accompanying music video for ‘Bubblegum Dog’, skillfully directed by Julia Vickerman and co-helmed by writer/director Tom Scharpling, MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser pay homage to the ’90s alternative scene. They seamlessly blend DIY surrealism with a serious grunge aesthetic. Described by Vickerman and Scharpling as a fusion of a “charming, DIY, surreal, cardboard craft aesthetic” with the “ultra-serious grunge videos” they grew up watching on MTV. The video delivers a mix of brooding angst and absurd childlike fun, reaching its climax with gallons of pink slime.

‘Bubblegum Dog’ also follows the stunning, 2n-produced animated video for their previous release ‘Mother Nature’, directed by Jordan Fish. “All joking aside (never!), we are very proud of this album and the fact that it was a relatively painless birth after a lengthy gestation period, and are happy to be releasing this baby into the world with Mom + Pop”, MGMT says. “Musically speaking, we are running at around 20% adult contemporary and no more than this, please.”
